The Accident
On February 28th, 2009 a car accident left me a C4-C5 quadriplegic. I have been told countless times by healthcare professionals that I would never use my arms and hands, let alone walk, again. I have, however, been proving them wrong. I continue to progress past their expectation! I wonder if these individuals are telling me what they really believe or whether they are just preconditioned to not to give us hope anymore? Are they just afraid of the retaliation of those who were unable to progress? Miracles still happen! I have seen them! They have seen them! I am going to be one even though it is going to be a lot of hard work!
My Condition
What most people don't realize is that the visible limitations a person with quadriplegia exhibits are not the whole story. Not having normal use of my arms and legs means that everything from eating to going to the bathroom is dependent on another person. My mother has left behind our family in Japan to become my arms and legs in California until I get better!
What next?
I have already beaten some odds by learning to push a manual wheelchair and brushing my own teeth, using a computer, painting, and playing the piano (with help) again, but I know I am capable of much more. I will keep you updated on my progress along the way.
